History

Happy Tracks Horse Hotel is the first of its kind on I-40. It was accidentally started by Eldon Plunk in 1965 when he was renovating an old dairy barn on his farm to store farming equipment. A couple spotted the barn after a long trip from Minnesota while traveling with their horses down I-40 and asked to spend the night. Plunk quickly set up a couple of stalls for their horses and the rest is history. Today, Happy Tracks Horse Hotel is owned and operated by Vic and his son, Lance Plunk. This 3 generation Hotel, located on family owned property, has become a destination stop for equine owners from California to Maine.

What Is A Horse Hotel

Overnight horse boarding stables, or horse hotels, provide indoor stalls and outdoor stalls, pens or pastures for horses that are in need of a good night's rest. Happy Tracks Horse Hotel is perfect for people who are trailering horses long distances to rodeos, barrel racing, or PBR events. It is also a great family friendly place for those taking their horse or horses on vacation with them, or moving across the country.

Amenities

Happy Tracks Horse Hotel is one barn located just off Interstate 40, 4 miles west from Amarillo, Texas. It offers a safe and clean indoor and outdoor board with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, just like the old days. There are 6 paddocks with 21 cinder block stalls built for privacy and comfort. Bedding and buckets are provided and freshwater is available. Stalls are 12 ft. by 15 ft. and 17 ft by 17 ft, some with outdoor run-in attached. There are 12 ft. by 12 ft. outdoor panel stalls.

Happy Tracks Hotel is located close to Amarillo Motels and restaurants. There is also an AirBnB in the area, as well as 2 mobile homes and a fully furnished 2 bedroom, 1 bath bunkhouse for rent on the property so owners can rest comfortably knowing their animals are enjoying a much needed rest. Safe and private parking is available on the parking lot right behind the barn with plug-ins for horse trailers. There is plenty of turnaround space for large trailers and trucks. Happy Tracks Horse Hotel is located across the interstate from Love’s Travel stop.

Why Take A Break

Animals need breaks during long trips to rest their legs from the constant balancing required while the trailer is in motion. Side effects from trailering include dehydration, colic and the inability to clear the airways due to being tied and inhaling dust and road particles. Happy Tracks Horse Hotel is an excellent place to de-stress, rehydrate, and relax overnight.

Happy Tracks Horse Hotel is not just for horses. Mr. Plunk has hosted every type of creature from mutts to million dollar stud horses. He has also provided overnight accommodations for bucking bulls, ponies, the Budweiser Clydesdales, a camel, a ribbon-winning sow and even the world’s largest alligator.
